I really hope it's less at $1199 (assuming the specs I guessed), but your price seems very realistic.
I want to buy one :( -> I might hold off a bit on this round. However, I want a card that can actually rasterize 4k. If the 4090 sells out, I might not wait figuring the same will happen with AMD.


I will make two more predictions:
2.5 slots, very similar to the previous generation in size
3 of the fins in the fin section will be red accent colored ( I know this is a gimme )

When placed next to a rx4090, it will look smaller, and that will be intentional.

Unless there are major papered over issues and massive amounts of overhead going to a first gen chiplet design then I'm really not sure how N31 doesn't manage to at least match the 4090 in standard rasterization workloads.

Maybe it starts falling behind at the more extreme resolutions like 8K and VR where AD's vast "half pumped" shader array, huge L2 cache, and large high bandwidth memory start really coming into play, but I just don't see it for 4k and below.

While I would expect AMD to put more effort into the RT side of the equation where they are weakest, NV's headstart there means I wouldn't be surprised if AMD came up short on the RT front.

It will be interesting to see if the N31/N32 segregation will happen with different numbers of MCD as well as active WGP's

Alternatively:

RX 7500(N33) 6GB-> $329
RX 7600(N33) 8GB -> $399
RX 7700(N32) 12GB -> $599
RX 7800(N32) 16GB -> $699
RX 7900(N31) 20GB -> $899
RX 7950(N31) 24GB-> $1099

Launch it with Zen 4 3D.

I can also see AMD doing better in DX12 titles at 1080p / 1440p due to the NV driver overhead that really helped them in DX11 titles but is now hindering them somewhat.

That would make the most sense. And assuming N31 matches 4090 in raster, AMD should compare combos of:
Zen4 3D + N31
vs.
Raptor lake + 4090

And get all the small performance boosters the AMD combo has:
- V-Cache
- SAM
- PCIe5 CPU -> GPU
- PCIe5 M.2 Direct storage to PCIe5 GPU

This looks like all those 'legimite leaks' last time that RDNA 2 will only compete with RTX 3070. And we all know how it turned out. Not only competing with Ampere but beating it in 1080p and 1440p in rasterization.
Some idiots were even counting frames in demo from AMD Zen 3 presentation to prove their point.

RDNA3 would have to be really a stumble if it can't compete with Ada. After all according to TPU 4090 is 52% faster than 3090 in 4K in rasterization (and 53% faster than 6950 XT). Far from amazing as some are trying to present it.
Ray-tracing I can believe would be an uphill battle. But rasterization should be in a ballpark.

December probably is right. I suppose it's info from AIBs and that they should know.

TPU screwed up. They use a 5800X CPU.
Most reviews show 70~80% uplift over 3090 (Full Ada vs Full Ampere will probably be the same)

The range vs the 3090Ti is between +52% from TPU to + 65% at ComputerBase with Hardware Unboxed / Techspot being in the middle at +58% all at 4K.

I am sure 3D centre will do a meta analysis in the next few days to show that average across a wider array of reviewers but I expect it to be in the +60% +/- region vs the 3090Ti, which is about exactly what was calculated from the 3 non DLSS games NV shared so atleast they get a thumbs up there for showing 3 titles that create a representative average rather than picking 3 that showed pretty large gains.

In any event with a 50% increase in perf per watt for RDNA3 and a bump in TBP to 400+W AMD should at the very least match the 4090 in 4K raster if not get ahead. For 420W my range is +10% to + 20% in 4K raster for top N31 but obviously if the TBP is lower then it won't be as fast. 375W should be enough to be about even with the 4090 at 4K.

If top Navi 31 loses to RTX 4090 in raster then all the added shaders'll be mostly a dead weight, especially when factoring in those rumoured clockspeed increases. And it could well be if we look at Amepere which more than doubled the shader count vs 2080Ti, but was nowhere near 2x+ faster.

According to Kyle Bennett’s sources, AMD Navi 31 GPU could be the first to support DisplayPort 2.1. This standard has not been confirmed by VESA (the organization that standardizes the display interface), although you can find ‘certified’ cables for this standard already.
But it is not correct that you need chroma to go above 120Hz 4k, you can do it with DSC.

So the problem is pretty academic...

I think that the idea that you are buying a new $1600 GPU that has at least a 5 year lifespan, it would be nice if it had the most modern ports possible. That's my $.02. I am not likely to buy it, so that's a big shrug from me, but I can understand why some folks are a bit miffed about it. But that's more of a 4090 thread topic.

It certainly won't hurt these cards to have cutting edge display specification ports. Like when cards finally started coming with HDMI 2, it wasn't right at launch when that was a nice to have, it was a year or two later and certainly its nice now (GTX 9 series comes to mind).

The 4090 is actually 70-80% faster vs. the 3090. I agree with your statement, however. Even if AMD simply shrunk Navi 21 they would get 40-50% more performance. They have clearly done more then that. The bonehead that runs WCCFTech clearly fails at basic math. AMD wouldn't be putting in a bunch of engineering effort towards a chiplet design unless it is going to pay off in terms of perf/watt. I suspect the gains will be similar to 3090 -> 4090, possibly even higher gains. We will see.
