Speculation on the PPD in F@H of the new 3080 and 3090 Ampere cards ?

10496(3090) and 8704(3080) cuda cores ? Thats insane. The PPD of the 3090 ? Ideas ? Is 8 million ppd possible ? Right now I am getting 4.2 million ppd on my 2080TI.

I saw some guesses that the 3090 would hit the 6mil to 8 mill range. I’m also interested in 3080vs 3090, as it Looks like the 3090 will be around 25% faster for 10% more power, but cost more than 2x the 3080. I can do one 3090, but 2x 3080 seems an interesting option.

Well, i'am hearing the 3080 is twice as fast as the 2080, so whatever the 2080
did in folding (PPD) and ABOUT twice that for the 3080, maybe.
From the story, The first card out the door will be the GeForce RTX 3080. With NVIDIA touting upwards of 2x the performance of the RTX 2080, this card will go on sale on September 17th for $700

The 3080 is definitely an attractive option. I’ve also read that people are selling off their 2080 Ti’s after the announcement, as expected.

Someone could be the new Anandtech F@H king with just
2 or 3 of these 3090's o_O

How long does it take after release for F@H to support the new cards? I’m really leaning toward a 3090 (depending on reviews) but if it takes F@H a few months to support a new GPU, I might not try to get one of the initial launch of cards

LOL. I can hear you.............. I am right here. :)

FWIW, I don't plan to be an early adopter. There are always driver issues and compatibility issues early on. Plus we (DCers) are at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to priorities. They are gamers first, always. In my experience. ;)

I will have at least one 3090 at first release if possible. My problem is have the electricity available to USE it.

Be prepared to pay the price for these. I can see the 3090 at 1,500-1,600 hundred
unless you buy from Nvidia. And the 3080 will be sold out the first day, going for 800
to 850 unless you buy from Nvidia.

I got my 1080ti on release day from Nvidia. Hoping to do the same here, the only question is 3080 or 3090

If you're able to you will be a lot better off performance-wise going with 2x RTX 3080s instead as everything is pointing towards the 3090 being "only" 20% faster. That would still make the 3090 more power efficient at 350W vs 320Wx2. But hey, if you get the two 3080s you save $100 you can put towards the additional electric costs... for a little bit anyway.

This is my first post in almost 4 years. Been a long while hahaha. Just got back into folding again. :) With my regular power usage at my new place and how electric rates work by Folding and cryptomining I'm actually gonna be saving $30/mo on my electric bill by doing it LOL. Looking forward to contributing again. :D

Last night, computerbase.de released an article about the architecture of "gaming Ampere" (GA102 in RTX 3090/3080, and GA104 in 3070):
in German/ autotranslated.

(That is, the NDA on some background info ran out, and I suppose AnandTech will have their own technical report out soon. No benchmarks yet; these are still under NDA, and the duration of that NDA is under NDA too.)

Edit, the gist of it: Floating point computing units (single precision, FP32) have been doubled relative to Turing, but the count of integer computing units remained the same (normalized to the number of streaming processors). Hence, Distributed Computing applications which use FP32 calculations should see a large boost in performance — such as Folding@home — but INT32 based applications probably won't — such as PrimeGrid PPS-Sieve, right?

Would it make any sense to buy RTX 20x0 cards right now specifically for distributed computing? The resale value of 2080ti's seemed to drop ~30% when the 3090 information was released, so they're almost within the amount I'd be willing to spend on a video card. 1080ti's are still holding their value surprisingly well.

If I didn't want to 8-12 million ppd of the 3090, I would be all over the sub $500 2080TI's, they do 304 million ppd. But they have not dropped yet in price. Still $700 (buy it now, I am not a bidder, too much stress)

I'm seeing $550 as the low end price on various non ebay sites except for very rare ones under $500 that are snatched up immediately. I've done 'best offer' on ebay and sent offers of $450 for a bunch of 2080 ti's and all were declined.

Tom's Hardware speculates that cryptomining could raise prices again. :(

I wish I could type what I really think about miners... Those <redacted myself> miners need to jump off a cliff !!! The rest of the world can't function normally with them around. Normal people have rights, and by their actions, they are violating our rights. (indirectly)

Buying limited-availability luxury goods is certainly not a "right".

Edit: And I would think, that by funding R&D into future cards / architectures, that GPU miners are doing people like yourself that do F@H a favor. If there were only Folders buying GPUs, I think that they would be priced a LOT higher than they are, LOL.

Lack of availability is on the mfg's, not the miners.

Edit: Not that I'm hating on you, for hating on miners. You're certainly entitled to your opinion. But honestly, it's not fair to blame one particular group of GPU users, for issues that are largely caused by the mfg.

What if "Gamers" blamed "Folders" for GPU shortages? Would that be fair? Think about it.

And then, what about people that Game, Fold, and Mine in their spare time, to pay for their other two hobbies with the GPU? That seems like a reasonable thing to do to me, if it will make you some money, and make the card free after 1-2-3 years.

Edit: I admit, most "serious miners" (excluding combo/hobby miners, like I just mentioned above), are in it for pretty-much "just the money", and you could probably accurately call them greedy, in some sense. But in another sense, if the mfg of the cards is willing to sell those cards "in bulk" to those "greedy" customers, rather than implement a one card per customer scheme (in cases of limited production capacity), then that's not on the miners', that's on the mfg and retailer.

Since these are based, apparently (?) on Samsung's 8N process, they shouldn't compete with wafers @ TSMC, so Zen3 and Renoir production is safe, I guess, along with "Big Navi".

If its like last time. the miners bought up virtually all of the video cards, and due to supply and demand, the prices skyrocketed and availability was almost non-existant. Do you blame the MFG'ers for not predicting this ? and taking 3 months to up production, since it was not in their plan ? They are supposed to have a crystal ball, and know everything ?

AMD was almost in the same place with Zen. They had no idea how quickly it would catch on, and it took them a while to get supply up to demand. But on a whole nother level. They were a little short, and prices did not skyrocket.
