anyone have any guesses at what price range a 6800 GT will be going for when the summer rolls around?

IMO, this depends on what happens this spring/summer. If nVidia/ATi don't have a new chip out, the cost will most likley remain roughly where it is. However, should there be a new chip from either manufacturer, the price will drop. Another wildcard in this is if ATi can get the X800 XL out the door in large quantities. This would put a great deal of pressure on nVidia to drop the price on the 6800GT, since the X800 XL performs similarly but at a lower MSRP.

This is all totally speculation on my part, but as I see it until there is a real competetor to the 6800GT at a lower pricepoint, there is no reason for the cards to drop in price. There has been talk of price cuts since these cards were introduced, but due to the market they have not yet materialized. I got my 6800GT back in July for right around $400 which is still pretty much the going rate for this card.

Isn't it almost time for nVidia to have their initial reports for their next GPU? I thought the end of Feb. was the customary month for the new GPU press releases from nVidia? With a few cards released in late April or early May? And of course "volume productions" available in October. Dang.....the 2005 is almost over already;-)

Yes, but this would usually be a "spring refresh" (like the X850s from ATI), not a whole new card architecture (NV50/R500). We might see a "GeForce 6900" or something like that, but I really doubt they'll have anything to say about GF7 (or whatever NV50 will be called). Saying too much about next-gen products is rarely a good idea, as it makes people want to wait instead of buying what you have to sell today.

I would be very surprised to see either NV50 or R500 before Q4 '05 (at the very earliest), but I may still be proven wrong.

As for the OP's question -- I agree with the comments posted above. If the X800XL is widely available at $300, that will drag the 6800GT down to $300-350 to compete. Otherwise, there's very little pressure for sellers to lower prices, since demand is still high.

Depends on the cost of production, many cards seem to just disapear when the value drops. But one thing almost for sure, the fps and features you get for your $400.00 is sure to increase.
