Speculation about motion control in next gen PS/XBox

Is it pretty much a given that the next generation sony and microsoft consoles will be built with motion control in mind? Do you think they'll require all releases to support motion controls, similar to what nintendo does now?

I don't really mind as long as gamepads are still supported. I don't really have much to say about the issue, but I'm curious about implications embracing motion controls might entail. My guess is little to none. I expect I'll get more interesting responses.

I would like it if we could get to a good solid hybrid scenario. Better than what the wii and PS move are, but not quite as intense as Kinect. For example, in a racing game, I'd still like to use my XBox 360 controller, but I'd like to have head tracking so I can look through the corner, like you would in real life.

You're thinking way too far ahead bro, both sony and MS have said the lives of the consoles will at least expand until 2014~2015~

The problem with that type of system is that while you are turning your head, you're still looking at the monitor in front of you. I think I'd be incredibly annoyed at having to turn my head but keep my eyes forward.

What TheVrolok said. The idea sounds cool but it seems awkward to tilt your head while keeping your eyes focused on the screen.

What can I say, I'm curious as to how motion control is going to play out. I put speculation in the thread title for a reason 😉

If it's a hybrid like crazySOB said, then we've got a winner!

I really doubt the next gen consoles are coming out in 2014 and 2015...how could they? Current consoles hit their graphical limit awhile back. Honestly, this generation has barely advanced from Oblivion, and the original gears of war. There are always decent improvements, but there has not been anything mind blowing.

I have begun to switch over to PC titles wherever possible. If it goes on for another 4-5 years, my xbox 360 will be covered in a layer of dust by the time the new ones come out. Its a good machine, but it is wayyy past its prime. If new consoles do not come out by 2012-2013 i will be very surprised.

Also with regards to motion control, i doubt it will be a main focus, but i am sure they will support it. To me motion control is still in its infancy, and has a ton of problems before it is even viable. Wiggling a wii stick seems more like a weird way to press a button than actual motion tracking.

Developers would probably just want them to improve the current schemes (better resolution, more CPU power for processing) instead of changing to a new design.

The motion control may still be an optional addon (in some bundles not others) just because of cost -- one way MS has made the 360 win over the PS3 in sales is with the stripped-down arcade unit always being $100 cheaper.

I do not think that they will require motion control for all the games, because it simply does not work well for all game types.

My guess is that it will at best have the motion control pre-bundled and have at least one launch game bundled with it, but more likely motion control will be dead long before the next console release.

Motion control is going to live or die by the game titles that support it, and how well they support it. Personally, I think that by this time next year we will see motion control regulated to a few ‘party game’ titles, and then it will quietly die away.

Because most people want to spend 300 on a console then not spend any more money on hardware. People got REALLY pissed when the XBox 1 was replaced by the 360 after 4 years. Consoles are based on the idea of being simple, cheap and require little maitenance. And most people don't care about graphics as much.

To play stuff like Metro, you need a new CPU and Graphics card every so often. If you bought the 360 in 2006...you can still play games coming out.

Moreover, games like Shadow Complex, Trine, Limbo, Braid - they aren't stressing graphics at all and are tons of fun.

Order of how things matter: Gameplay > story > graphics

Assuming all 360 games look on par with Reach and Mass Effect - which most do - I'm totally happy.

While I agree with most of what you said, I think the thing that is going to limit the Xbox is going to be its DVDrom drive. Games are already getting too big to fit on disk, and they already have to face multi-disk games with long install times. That will kill the console soon. And when MS decides to update the Xbox, Sony will have to update the PS or be compared to a system that has updated graphics, and a faster processor, and just all around smokes the PS3, all for about the same price.

Ok here's the scoop, the ps3 and xbox 720 havent even been designed, or planned beyond preliminary ideas. I doubt you know anything about chip design but the basics are 2+ years development and 2-3 testing and revisions. Both systems are 4 years out. All 3 are set to be designed by IBM with NVIDIA or AMD behind the graphics. Your best bet is to see a working model at e3 in 2013.

I'm trying to convince some of the engineers to have support for 2560x1600 but that's not really up to me or anyone near me lol
