I'm looking to build a server to run Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament simultaneously, as well as some ftp. I already have two P3-500s (512K), and am going to pair it up with a Tyan Tiger 133 (S1834) and 1GB of PC133. I'll probably run sort of RAMdisk to keep the levels in main memory at all times. Would this be enough to run a dedicated server with say, 16 players, in both UT and CS?

i don't play UT much, but i know CS is a real cpu hog for admins. I remember a friend of mine tried to run 2 cs servers on the same box (a dual PIII 800, if i recall correctly). What would happen is when both servers were full, the server would lag incredibly when a map first started, it took 5 minutes for anyone to see a message they types, or for them to buy items.

Talk to Neotechman, he is AnandTech's unofficial IRC chatroom/Counterstrike Administator. He knows his stuff and can probably assist you.

I ain't no expert, but running dedicated(assuming that's what you do) game servers doesn't require a killer cpu. I think 500mhz will be fine for either game. One thing that would concern me though is how well the mobo and perhaps Intel's SMP design handles all the "traffic" that will be going through the sys, not that you have much choice in the matter. Hmm, maybe it would be better to run 2 systems rather than a dual cpu rig, but I dunno.
