How do you specify specific users that can read/write a network share in XP. I have looked all over to try and find a place for it but the closest I have come is making the folder private for the current user. I can't find a place where I can set permissions like NT and 2k. Damn you Microsoft, you dumbed XP down so much that it is actually harder to use.

If you mean what I think you mean, you just need to turn off Simple File Sharing. Then, when you right-click on a folder or file in Explorer, you'll get a more "useful" sort of security dialog available to you from the context menu. This only works in WinXP Pro. Home Edition has only Simple File Sharing, AFAIK.

I think you are referring to the same thing I am. I am talking about how in Win2k you can go into sharing properties for a certain folder and set the permissions based on users on the system. This is what I want to do in XP but I cannot figure out how. Where do you turn off Simple File Sharing in XP. Also, there is a directory that is shared for everyone to read. Will this go away if Simple File Sharing is turned off. If so, I guess that I will have to enable the Guest account.

If you go into Control Panel and into Folder Options. it is the last item on the View Tab.

Oh, sorry. As cbsmith has already said, it's the last item under the View tab of Folder Options. Actually, you can check the help system for this. Believe it or not, MS has finally produced truly useful help systems in Win2K and, especially, WinXP. I'm still so unused to this idea that I often forget to look there myself. Then later on I dope slap myself when I see an answer to an issue staring me in the face -- right there in the old Help and Support applet.

The disposition of the Shared Documents folder (which is what I assume you're asking about) is pretty much self-explanatory in the sharing dialog you'll get if you click on the "Sharing and Security" choice in its right-click context menu. You won't have to enable the Guest account unless you don't wish to set up user accounts for those who access your system from other systems. I wouldn't activate the Guest account unless it were absolutely necessary.

Hope this helps. Sorry I wasn't more detailed in my first response.

The only reason I said that I may have to enable the Guest account is because my friend has a directory shared to everyone. It is like a read only share in Win9x where no password has been entered. So, unless XP will keep the folder in it current state after simple filesharing is turned off I may have to enable the Guest account.
