"Speciesist"... Is that even a real word?

I read an article a couple of weeks ago, when some nutjob proclaimed that the majority of Americans are "speciesist". Basically she was saying that it's a travesty that people are making such a big deal about the attacks on 9/11. After all, millions of chickens die each day, and 9/11 can't even compare to that.

No joke. She is the head of some group to save the chickens.

i think if chickens where sentient beings more people would care.

but as of the moment, they are just too damn tasty.

"Speciesists", if I heard correctly, believe that all animals should be treated equally, and for us to hold the interests of the human race over those of other members of the animal kingdom is somehow morally wrong. These people have apparently never heard of the "food chain", and completely ignore the seeming incongruity of the entire rest of the animal kingdom not caring about their point of view.

It's only a short stretch from there to then believe that eating plants is wrong because plants are living creatures too...
