I got my last acceptance letter about a week ago and was filling out the paperwork and such, and it asked if I wanted to live in the specialty dorms, would be the engineering dorm for me (at RIT btw).
I was wondering whether you chose the dorms like this or lived in the normal ones and what your experiences were with them. What do you think?
I'm kinda torn, on one hand you get to live in a building full of people who could help you specificly with what you're majoring in, on the other you're in a building full of engineers, good or bad? I don't know, you tell me.
Thanks.

On the other hand, you'll probably find it much easier to study. There will be people to help you in your major stuff, and there will probably be fewer people interested in partying, since it's an engineering dorm.

Just don't expect to see too many females.

Edit: And expect to run into the most annoying people you've ever met.

Wow, that's a good way to get a well-rounded college experience...

I lived in the regular non-engineering dorm..

I no longer go to that university:(

It was practically impossible to study, much less sleep.

it depends if you want to party a lot... or if you want a nicer environment to study. i lived in a "specialty" dorm my freshman year, and moved out after that. it worked out well for me. it's only for a year... try it, if you don't like it, then live somewhere else the next year.

I want to have parties to go to, and I want to enjoy my time at college as much as possible, if necessary I know I will be able to make myself go to the library or somewhere to study, so I'm not too worried about that, I'm just looking to get the most out of my college experience while doing as well as I can.

I disagree. You can always make friends in another dorm and hang out there. You can find great parties in other dorms and always know you can always go home to quiet.

Whereever you go there are going to be a bunch of dumbasses that party a lot, vandalize anything, and just plain screw around all day.
I'd go for the specialty dorm.
To me I would probably study the same regardless of which dorm I was in.
In my freshman year I went to the learning community and it didn't help me one bit. All it did was hook me up with similar/same major roommates. O-kayyy...

It's a lot more difficult to build relationships as a visitor to a dorm than if you were an actual resident, unless you're a very natural social and charismatic person, people will wonder why you're always in their dorm if you don't live there.

I'm sorry, but you'll like me even more now that I upgraded to a pair of Bryston's :D

EDIT: Go to the normal dorm.

Think about your future long term. If it is beneficial to your studies by moving there, then do so. There is no law that says you must score with a woman in college. You can still do that while doing well in your classes.

Thanks again for the replies everyone, pretty much confirms what I was kinda leaning towards, almost positive I'll be staying in the normal dorms now. Thanks.

definately in a normal dorm. You can always go to a library and study, and you can always go to your friends in the engineering dorm for help...but for god sakes, live with normal poeple.

I have cred, I'm an engineer :p

It's not like you won't party at the engineering dorms. And it's not like you won't get invited to other parties at other dorms. Drinking will be more available if you stay in a normal dorm, study time will be readily available if you stay in the engineering one.

BTW, keep this in mind.
You can retake a class anytime you want, but you can never relive a party.

Dorms are for fools.

Find yourself a nice apt, get a 10hr a week job to pay for the extra cost and revel in the fact that you aren't sharing a bathroom with 40 people.

If there is a psychology, human development, or English major dorm, live in that one. :)

Where I studied, the off campus housing cost less than the dorms.
So 6 of us got two adjacent apartments in the 2nd year and basically lived there till we graduated.

Course, the first year was spent in the dorms, and those were some fun days. :)
Helped that we were in the dungeon level and had all these space to ourselves to do stupid things. Hehehe.

In either case your going to find annoying people and people you probably wouldnt prefer to be around. If your into partying: most people doing engineering, at my school at least, are normal students who party just as much as anyone else. Anyway, I think it would be best to stay in the engineering dorms, that way you can get good help with homework, which means you can usually get it done faster, which means more partying. I mean, you can still hang out with the "cooler" people, you just might not be living with them.

I live at home though, so I guess I dont really know what dorm life is like.
