Good morning all,

I'm looking for some information about HDD's. I have need for one that will be in use 24/7. It will be hooked into an 8-channel DVR and be used for video storage.

Looking for 2tb, and something really reliable / rated for 24/7 use.

Thanks

What DVR? What connections does it have? If it is just an IDE or SATA connection any of the usual hard drive manufacturers should suffice.

DVR model isn't really relevant, I think, but it's a Digimerge DH200 series. It's a SATA connection.

I pulled the 320gb HDD that came with the DVR, and I purchased a WD Caviar Green 1.5tb on 2/4/2010 for use in the DVR. The DVR is already reporting check disk errors on the drive.

Any hard drive can fail, and if we're just talking one drive here we may well be talking bad luck.

However, there is a difference between low-priced consumer grade hard disks and more expensive enterprise class hard disks that come with longer warranty periods and are rated for 24/7 usage. It can be tricky to figure out which drives are enterprise class variants as not all the online PC component vendors clearly state which is which. Sometimes you'll be lucky and they'll be labelled as Enterprise or 24/7 , e.g. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2tb-h...-cache-8ms-ncq

Enterprise drives will be, on average, more reliable, but you can always be unlucky and have a drive fail in the first week/month/year. . . that's the nature of the game.

that's the nature of the game.

Some people refuse to play games with things of such an important nature!

I'll be on the lookout for good pricing on one of those 24/7 rated drives. If any one has experience with one that you would like to recommend, then tyia.

Hitachis have a pretty good reputation, and rarely any firmware hiccups to be heard of, unlike the stuff coming out of WD/Seagate these days.

A 5K3000 would likely be an ideal drive, and they're cheap.
