Special memory for Compaqs?

A friend just bought a Compaq with the 2800+ XP in it and is wanting to added another 512mb. Will any value memory work in the PC?

As pkme2 brought up, with OEM computers such as those sold by Compaq, you need to use the Compaq system model number to search for the motherboard. Once the motherboard is found, then you need to determine
  • how many slots of memory are available on the motherboard,
  • what the maximum RAM stick size is that the motherboard will recognize,
  • and how many sticks of RAM are currently installed.
The Compaq model number should be available on the case and most any RAM of the type listed on the motherboard specifications should work. It may be best to stick with the value RAM or cheapest RAM available since that is probably what is already installed and the motherboard will probably not benefit from premium RAM that is more expensive.

For some reason I can't make much sense out of your posts...it might be because English is my second language, but I don't really think so...

That said, every HPaq that I've used in a long long time has accepted any brand of memory, mostly Kingston Value, as long as it's of the proper type.
Just buy some PC3200, it'll work fine at lower speeds too.
If you wanna make really sure, just use Crucial's memory selector and pick your system model.
