The japanese do hybrids the best and the germans do diesel the best...why doesnt vw or toyota try to combine the two together...hybrids get like 45 to 50 mpg and diesels get like 40 to 45. Wouldn't that be a great economical car? Are there any technology restrictions that keep them from developing these diesel hybrids?

diesel is a dirty fuel, thats why. pollution, even with hybridity. plus, diesel works better on rigs with high torque loads and 500+engines meant to haul large loads. not a 500-pound hybrid towing the family jetski

Mercedes-Benz already has a concept car that gets 80 some mpg. Its the car that looks like a fish.

actually i was reading an article not too long ago in popular science and it was saying that there are major strides made in diesel tech. in the pollution aspect. I'll try to find that magazine when i go home next time.

Volkswagon made a diesel hybrid car they called the 100km car, supposedly could go 100km on 1 litre of petrol.

Though it was more of a light car like a smartcar. It couldn't be imported for safty reasons.

diesel has made strides at being cleaner. the particulate filters are getting better and better.

Is that the car with really low drag? It looks hot.

Wow some people are ignorant, Diesel isnt bad for the enviornment its the sulfer that America requires that is the smell and polutant (most of it). The gov is making Diesel cars have better catylic converters and not trying to stop it where the problem is, the fuel. Europe has a different Diesel fuel requirement, so they dont have the polution from sulfer like we do.

whoopee, 62 MPG.

i passed a honda insight the other day with the license plate: "77 MPG"
there's a civic hybrid on campus with a plate that reads "52 MPG"
some insight owners claim lifetime MPG averages topping 100 MPG. and these are usable, safe, incredibly low-polluting cars, that we can buy right now.

I think it was called the VW ONe or something. It could only seat one person, and might've been a 3 wheeled vehicle.

Opel made a sportscar that could go 0-60 in under 4 seconds and get like 80mpg by using a diesel engine.

Yes it is, I cant think of the name but its drag coefficient is .19, the prius has a drag coefficient of .25. But it seriously looks like a freakin fish.

umm, dawg...100 km/liter = 242 mpg

Somehow I doubt a car could get 242 mpg with current tech and be road legal anywhere.

I don't know if it was street-legal, it was a purpose built car, meant to do just that. If I'm not mistaken they did achieve their goal as well.

No, it's about 240miles per gallon.

4L=1gallon, 400km=240miles (approximately)

well yeah 242 seems ridiculous, but the VW lupo, according to the link i posted earlier gets around 80 mgp and is the size of a mini cooper and costs less than one(which means it should only be slightly more than the avg price for a subcompact) and its only a semi-hybrid...if they keep working on it they could easily 'hybridize' it more and get another 10 or 15 mpg.

WRONG, on almost all counts.

1. The diesel fuel in the US isn't as refined as European diesel, and next year we'll have cleaner diesel fuel with a lower sulfur content.
2. Diesels are always more efficient, even on little econoboxes.
3. Diesel would work great in a hybrid, since diesels never were as rev-happy as gas engines in the first place.

They already are developing diesel hybrids, they are waiting to introduce them until the cleaner fuel requirements come into effect. Also diesels are more effecient engines than gasoline engines at highway speeds, and electric motors are the most effecient at low speeds --> the better combo.

Ooops, someone already beat me to posting this info. I personally am looking forward to them, and depending upon the models would buy one.

Also, a company is introducing a civilian version of the first commercially produced diesel motorcycle, it averages 102 MPG
