Break out the SPL meter and realize I'm averaging 115 dB.

It's true. When its good you don't even realize it is that loud.
 
Ouch... but then again I was a mean sound tech at a church I worked at, and when the contemporary band was on stage, the ambient dB was usually somewhere between 100 and 110... :evil:

Sorry but this really makes no sense. Subs should NEVER make it louder. Then again 99% of the car audio systems are PURE SH!T out there so...

Most SLM's use two or three scales. A,C, and U. U allows the full frequency capability of the instrument's microphone to be measured. C is very similar although it will not pick up the lowest frequencies. A weighting is most commonly used for measurements of NOISE that are critical to disturbances and aural damage. (ie OSHA).

So yes a typical "soulmobile" sound system may click in at 130 dB SPL but only 100 dBA SPL. An ideal system would do 130 regardless of the weighting. If the high frequency sections cannot go that high, the low frequency sections should be reduced accordingly!

But wait a minute! Lower frequencies require more volume to hear right? Yes this is true and also is th reason why a woofer is much bigger than a tweeter and a contra bass is much larger than an oboe. A gentle rollup as you go down is quite acceptable so you can hear the bass notes - to a point I suppose. In the realm of car audio things get complicated as you have 100 dB of BACKGROUND NOISE to overcome (unweighted).

Problem is folks run their LF so GD high it isn't funny. Booming bass is laughable yet that's what all those systems are banging out. When running through mister Blackman Harris he shows us a big happy face! (called Boom-Crash Curve) This is not good. I see this on a lot of graphic EQ's too. Yuck Yuck Yuck. Mister Yuck is green, mister Yuck is mean. Mister Yuck says your sound can never be clean! 😛
