I would say most "normal" computer users take no interest in their cases or speakers, but most people who are knowledgeable know a case is very important, but what about speakers? Would you guys think that speakers need to be though about as much as the rest of the stuff like keyboard, mouse, case etc? Or do you just forget about it and use a cheap $20 set that you have lying around?

For the time being my computer is my stereo, so you can guess I put a lot of time and consideration into both the sound card and speakers.

Same here. It's my gaming console and movie theater too. I currently use a set of Boston BA4800s, but my BA7800s should be here in the next week or two. I typically spend $200-$250 on computer speakers. Popular brands include Boston, Klipsch, Logitech, and AltecLansing. If you want more info, you should visit 3DSoundSurge.com.

I have a pair of Altec Lansing ADA 880's, I was just wondering if other people cared as much, because some of the people I know say they don't care (which horrified me).

at school, my rig is my stereo, so like the folks above i consider good speakers a necessary rig component.

I am using 2 NHT Super Zeros as satellites and a NHT SW3P subwoofer. They used to be part of a Home Theater system, replace by a Parasound AVC-2500/HCA-2205A with Hales Revelation 3, 2, Center and BagEnd Infrasub 18. I may get a multi-channel card, as this receiver(Sherwood Newcastle R-945) supports Dolby Digital/DTS. If they weren't sitting in the garage, I would probably be using some crappy speakers(and not thinking of spending more money to upgrade the soundcard).

I have a three piece set (with sub woofer) that I bought off a friend for $30. Cheapo sound card but the sound is great for me, then again my computer is NOT my stereo. I guess I am one of those folks that just really dosen't care (see we do exist).

Speakers are a must. I have a Pioneer surround receiver, Pro-Logic only, a Live! Platinum 5.1, a pair of Bose 201's and a Yamaha sub.

Yeah, I know. The Bose. I bought those when I didn't know any better. They are pretty nice tho.

What is important? What you see and what you hear. So to me, monitor and speakers are very importance. Money well spent for my Klipsch. :)
