The choice is yours, IMHO the second choice is way better both for your ears and your wallet. Oh, and BTW to all posters here suggesting crap like Logitech, Klipsch, Altec Lansing,... you really don't know nothing about sound and are just suggesting what you feel is good based on the looks of such systems and a fact that they are some 20$ more than generics - not their sound! I mean, c'mon guys, you really haven't heard Hi-Fi system EVER!
Why would anyone buy a new set of $100 speakers each year?
I also don't think that most people who go out and buy a $1000 system are going to use it for the rest of their life. If someone is willing to spend $1000, their interest is apparent and most likely they're the kind of person who is going to be buying another system a few years down the road (or at least upgrading parts of it as they go).
I think spending 10 to 20 times his original budget is a great way to be "better for his wallet"
I do however think that buying a set from logitech, Klipsch, etc. is better than buying generic crap. No, they're not great, but they're better than most sets in their price ranges.
Just because someone is asking what a good $50 or under system would be and we give him acutal suggestions doesn't mean we haven't heard something better.
I wouldn't suggest someone buy a $2000 computer system if they're just going to use it for browsing and e-mail.
