What does the Ohms rating means (eg. 4, 8,16 ohms state behind a speaker)

if the receiver only says connect 8 ohms speakers....wa happens when i connect 4 ohms or 16 ohms speakers?

thanks

It's the impedence/resistence of the speaker. If you hook up a 4 ohm set to an 8 ohm receiver it will either a) handle it, producing more power than at 8 ohms, b) go into protect mode because it's not beefy enough to handle a 4 ohm load, or c) blow up because it's not beefy enough to handle a 4 ohm load. Most receivers are not designed to drive less than an 8 ohm load. They can handle anything higher than 8 ohms, though, although the amound of power is reduced effectively by half every time you double the impedence (eg 100w @ 8 ohms, 50w @ 16 ohms).
