Speakers on the cheap

Another thread had me thinking. Are there any decent MM speakers for around $150 or less that is reasonable/good for music. Logitechs tend to be very boomy.
Is Kliptch still a mark above the rest?

Probably Klipsch Promedias (said to be better than the GMX)

Swan m200s used to be a little cheaper... now at $179 + whatever shipping is

You might be able to find a pair of powered studio monitors

A set of bookshelf speakers + a really cheap amp or receiver

2.1 or 5.1s

Are there any decent MM sets apart from the Klipsch?

What is your recommendation for a cheap amp/receiver and what vendors to get them from?

There's aren't a whole lot of sets in the $150 range...

You know about the Logitech offerings. Some people seem to love the Altec Lansing 5021s. I haven't heard them at all though.

For a cheap amp/receiver, there's the Sonic T-amp that's gotten amazing reviews.

Here's a review (watch out for NSFW ads)

I don't think there are any good new options besides that. You'd have to look for refurb units or ebay to get an old receiver or integrated amp otherwise.

I got a stereo receiver for $40 shipped off ebay to power my bass shakers and it does a good job.

Forget about the $150 range. I'm was just curious to find out what interesting stuff can be had for relatively cheap.

The more expensive stuff tends to be better naturally.

I haven't heard the Creature IIs, but I've read those are pretty good too.

Logitech is very popular around here for midrange computer speakers.

Klipsch Promedia Ultra 2.0s I've demoed at Best Buy and Costco, and my room mate just picked one up. He also has the 2.1s to compare with, and the midrange and highs are more pleasing to the both of us, it just sounds a lot cleaner, although the 2.1s were still being overpowered by the loose sub even at minimum settings. I'm not going to make any assumptions on the sonic accuracy of the 2.0s vs the 2.1s, but it's smaller (in terms of overall size, not satellite size) and sounds like a small bookshelf would, albeit the bass is looser, more resonant, because the cabinet is on the large end for the smallish drivers. It's about $90 retail.

He's moving the 2.1s as our TV speakers : )

Astrallite, this is gonna be OT a bit

for the promedia 2.1 what's your preferred setting for bass when you tested them out...the 10 o clock position? Just your normal listening volume

I've never actually "tested" the 2.1s, although since they are my roommates' (actually flatmate), I secretely turn it as low as I can whenever he leaves the music on and is out on errands. : )

We share a wall, so I don't love his subwoofer. It sounds like ass no matter what where I sit, so the lower the better 🙂
