Speakers, for onboard sound

Any ideas on a decent system, id prefer a 3 speaker system to a 5 or 6, since the room im installing it in is very large and I dont wanna run speaker cable all over the place and the added time concealing it.

I just want something better than my old harmon kardon 2 speaker setup .

how much money you want to spend. People could recommend a 3 piece set for $20 or I could chime in with a 3 piece set for $600. Price range is very important in speaker terms

Those are really excellent 2.1 solutions. If you're looking for a cheap soundcard to couple with one of those sets, the chaintech av710 is an excellent option. It has great digital out if you ever want to hook it up to a receiver or set of digital optical in speakers, but for your purposes it is also ideal due to it's set of 1 really high quality DACs. It is capable of 7.1 analog output, but the 7/8 jack has a really excellent DAC that you can enable to do standard stereo output with the latest via drivers. It's a good solution for someone looking for cheap 5.1 to 7.1 but ideal for a 2.1 customer.
