Speakers don't work after waking up from standby mode

I have an old Altec Lansing 2.1 setup which doesn't work right after the computer's back on from standby mode. How do I get it to work? I open Volume Control and click on "Mute all" twice, once to enable it and then disable it back. Then the speakers start working again.

Any ideas how to fix this? It seems that standby mode messes it up somehow.
 
Has this always happened or did it start after you changed something? Do you have the latest drivers for your soundcard?
