I wanna get a cheap pair of 2.0 speakers to put on my desktop. They would have to be placed 2 inches or so from the sides of my monitor. Would that damage the monitor?

I know that CRT + magnet = discoloration

It shouldn't. My cheap 2.0's are wedged right up against the front sides of the monitor and there's no problems at all.

If they are labelled "magnetically shielded" you're fine.
Easy way to tell too - put them near the monitor. You'll see lots of discoloration if they are not shielded.

My Logitech Z-640 satellites are shielded, or else just REALLY weak - the center speaker is sitting on top of my monitor, and the two front satellites are to either side.

If they are unsheild its a no no, but as long as they are shielded you should be fine.

Are a cheap (<$10 locally) pair of speakers typically gonna be sheilded?

Hi, The magnets in the speakers won't actually damage the crt but will cause distortion in the picture. Bad distortion. That will be fixed the next time you power up the crt by the degausing circuits in the Monitor. You will have to move the speakers farther away if that happens. 2 inches is probably OK as it is another several inches into the case toward the back of the case to get to the crt. At the front it's only maybe 1 inch to the crt. Also magnetism decreases by the square of the distance so will be very weak in your case. Hope this helps, Jim

if they are not shielded, keep them away. degaussing the monitor every day is not good for it.
