Speakers are "popping" - Altec Lansing

Strangely enough, they do it even unplugged from the computer, so I'm guessing it's not a feedback problem from the sound card.

They are ACS45s, the original versions, about 3 years old. Are they going bad? Sometimes they don't do it at all, other times it will pop every 60 seconds or so.

sounds like interference from an outside source gheck what else is pluged into the same circut that could be turning on and off

Double check the connections for loose/worn plugs - jiggle them around and see if it does it. The internal amp could also be going. Outside interference is possible too. Doesn't even have to be something electrically connected. I noticed when I sat my cell phone next to my monitor and speakers every few minutes the speakers will pop and the monitor will jump.
