speaker specs

ok....suppose i have a receiver that outputs 140W per channel, but i want to use speakers that have "600W peak power," could i use a 920W 2-channel (460W per channel) amplifier with those speakers?

and one small thing...speakers sold as a pair that say "x peak power handling" is that for the pair or for each speaker?

Be weary of actual power output from receivers... they are often not even close to what they are advertised as. Some brands are worse than others at this... what kind of receiver do you have?

Anyway, unless you have really inefficient speakers or they have a built in sub, 100 watts should be plenty for most purposes. Doubling power to speakers doesn't double the output from them either.

A 460watt/channel amp would probably be overkill for most people.... what kind of speakers are you talking about?

For power handling, I've always seen them advertised per speaker.

EDIT: Oh, and too much power is better than too little. The major issue with wattage is trying to drive you speakers really loudly and having your amp run out of power. This is called clipping and causes distortion and produces signals that are damaging to your speakers... tweeters are in most danger from this.
