Speaker/soundcard upgrade question

I currently have an old SB Live Value with Altec Lansing ACS45 2.1 speakers. I consider the sound to be good but would like to upgrade to a surround set-up. I mostly use the comp for games and the odd MP3. I do not watch DVD's on my computer.

Should I just keep the Sb Live and get some decent 4.1 speakers (z560's or Altec 641's) or will I get a noticeable improvement by going to an Audigy card and a 5.1 system?

What's your experience been with sound upgrades like this?

As far as soundcards go, I own a SB Live, a Phillips Acoustic Edge, and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. The phillips and TB card are the better cards, with the TB being the better of those two, IMHO.

For gaming, you might as well get a 4.1 or 5.1 speaker system. If you mostly listen to MP3's, then a good set of stereo speakers should be enough. As far as what brand to get, I recommend you go listen to the models you are interested in, preferably side by side if possible.

I have an SBLive5.1 and GameTheaterXP. I prefer the GameTheaterXP, and the external box is very neat, though most people probably wouldn't utilize nearly of half it's abilities.

yah... buying the new speaker will do. I'll do it if I were you. if you really need newer gaming audio (such as EAX 3, Sensaura, etc.) get a new soundcard.
