Speaker Recommendations?

I am looking for another set of speakers to replace my old set. I don't want to spend much more than $50. I was doing a little bit of research and I think I've narrowed it down. I realize these are all Logitechs, and while they might not offer the performance of some of the higher brand names, I am sure they will sound good regardless. I really like Logitech's design, and they will match the rest of my setup well.

Logitech X-530 for $56 + free shipping.
Logitech Z-3 for $64 after shipping.
Logitech X-230 for $47 after shipping.

Naturally, I think those 5.1s are the best deal. The 530s are only $9 more than the 230s, and they appear to use the same speakers/sub, except there is just 3 less, so I assume sound quality would be superior on the 5.1s. The Z-3s on the other hand, they actually cost more than the 530s, and are only 2.1s. I assume they use a higher quality driver/sub, which drives up the cost. I'm not sure if that'll be good enough to offset the 5.1s sound quality though.

I am mostly concerned with the clutter of having 5 speakers. I think I would have a tough time finding room on my desk, but I am sure I'll manage if I did choose those.

I rather have a good set of 2.1s than a crappy set of 5.1s. Has anyone had experience with both the Z-3s and the X-530s? How do the 230s sound? If either of the 2.1s sound decent, I might get those instead. I'm leaning towards the 530s just because they offer a better value, and I'll manage the clutter some how.

On a somewhat related note, I'm wondering if the 5.1s would work properly with my system. I currently use the onboard Nforce2 (Abit NF7-S v2.0) for sound. IIRC, I remember on the features list, it was Soundstorm certified, so I think its 5.1 compatible. But I am just looking to confirm if my mobo will properlly support the 5.1s.

I think I see 5 jacks on the board, but some of them are for headphones and a microphone. I assume they share the jacks, but can I still use headphones and microphones even with the 5.1 system? I don't want to be under the desk switching out jacks all of the time. If that is the case, I might be interested in the X-3/230s instead.

Thanks

Thanks. I love saving money :)

I'll be sure to get it from them instead of Amazon.com if I do indeed get the 530s.

i've got my sights on the 530's as well, seems everyone loves them. i'll give it another week or 2 and see if any bargains come out, but the 52$ is pretty good.

My wife has the Z340's and loves them (got 'em for $20) and my brother has the Z-640's and REALLY loves them (got them for $45). The 640's are a great budget 5.1 system, definitly very good "bang" for your buck. I have not tried out the newer logitech speakers (I still use the 400watt Z-560's) but if they are as good as my generation then go for them.

A review

It says it has the S/PDIF Out port, it looks like it glows red. I assume that is optical? It also has the standard 5 ports in addition to that.

EDIT: Thanks so far for the replys guys, I'm really leaning towards those 530s. My brother is bringing home an extra set of speakers he isn't using, and I'll try those out for a while. They are some 2.1 Logitechs. If I am satisfied, I might end up just using those until he wants them back or whatever.

Hey, its free ;).

I thought I'd mention that amazon has the z-3 set for $30 AR.

Free shipping too.

You could even make a 4.2 set with them for $60 if you wanted to. I haven't heard the x series of logitech, but I know the z-3s are a good buy.

EDIT: Do you know what set of speakers your brother is bringing you? If it's z-340s, those are a pretty nice entry level set.

Thanks for the link. I'll have to pass on the woodgrain ;).

I believe it is the Z-340s. Text

I remember it had a super bright LED.

If you can get z-340s for free, I don't think you should bother buying something under $50. It would be just a little bit better than a lateral move probably, and not worth the money probably.

I got 4 sets of z-340s for $100 at officemax and sold them to friends and family who have been very happy with them. Very solid set for the money.

Yeah, they are the Z-340s. I confirmed by looking up the order from Newegg.com that I placed a while back. I gave them to my brother for Christmas because he needed a set for his work computer. He got another job since then, and has these sitting in the box. I told him about me wanting new speakers, and he offered to let me borrow these until he needs them back, which probally won't be any time soon. Well, whenever he needs them back, I'll buy myself a set.

Looks like I got a decent set of speakers for free. I'll put this money aside for that 6800GT I've been eyeing out ;).

Thanks for the comments and replies guys, I appreciate all of them.
