Speaker recommendation

I have a PC with a soundblaster live sound card, I use it for games, DVD's and especially Music. I was wondering if any of you lot out in user land had any recommendations for a new set of speakers as the ones I am using at the moment are extremely poor. I was looking at the Cambridge Soundworks DTT2200 5.1 Surround Set, but I was unsure whether they were any good. I just want a good set of speakers with good sound quality that can handle my needs, for around that price. (£100 ($150)). If anyone could give me any information it would be extremely helpful.

Cheers

I have the Live MP3+ 5.1 with the DTT2200's. As far as I am concerned, this is a great budget setup. DVD 5.1 audio is fantastic. I know others think there are better speakers out there, and there may be, but for a budget system the DTT2200's can't be beat.

One note: You didn't say if your Live was a 5.1 version or not. The DTT2200's only work with the Live 5.1 soundcards, and don't work with previous versions of the Live cards.

dozzy,

I have the 2500's and find them to be excellent, although I agree they're not the best there is. I'd recommend you buy the 3500's though, if you're willing to spend another 50 or so pounds.

A friend has the DTT2200 and they look and sound good.

I have the Videologic DigiTheatre, and I consider, the extra money was worth it.

I just got the Sonigistix Monsoon MM700s and I love them. They're very directional, but the sound in the sweet spot (right in front of my monitor, where I spend too much of my life) is just fantastic with music, and the positioning with A3D from my MX300 is very precise. If you're considering a 3 piece set, these should be contenders.

If you want the loudest, most powerful speaker system you can get check out the Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 system. Four satallites and a sub with dual drivers. Total output is like 400 watts. :) They also make a 2.1 system, that is slightly less powerful, only has one driver in the sub, but has a cleaner signal and puts a headphone jack on the control sat. Only problem is its one of the more expensive sets. 4.1 is easily over 200 (I think) :)

If you are looking at the DDT2500, then any version of the SoundBlaster Live! with the S/PDIF output will work in 5.1, even the soundblaster Live! Value 2.0 w/ digital output. To watch DVD's in 5.1 all you have to do is hook a mono miniplug to composite adapter into the yellow jack on the Live! and the composite connector into the COAXIAL-IN jack on the DTT2500 reciever.

The DTT2500 will automatically decode the 5.1 stream for you, and you will get crisp, clear digital audio as well. Another set that totally kicks ass is the MidiLand 8200 set. it's got massive power and a built-in AC3 Decoder. (unfortunately no DTS). :(

Another awesome deal is the Pioneer HTP-201 packaged system. If you have a Costco in your area, check to see if they have it in stock. It's retailing here for $499 CDN. It incudes a DD 5.1/DTS 500watt reciever, 5x100 surround and centre speaker, and an 8" 100watt sub. an excellent starter set. The reciever supports Toslink and COAXIAL Digital inputs, as well as 6-channel Analog inputs.

Although this seems to be mainly about the Cambridge, I recently got the Altec ACS54, a four pc with sub for 55 bucks. They don't get extremely loud, (40 total watts) however they are cheap and sound great. Another thought, go to Best Buy and test all the speakers in the computer speakers center.
