Speaker question

I've seen a number of pictures and such where people install woofers and such with the cone facing away from the odvious listener and towards things like trunk floors. Is there any point to this other than showing off the back end of the speaker? It seems to me that the quality of the sound would be much better if the cone was facing into the passenger compartment of a car.

Our ears cannot discern where bass frequency sounds come from.

Low frequencies are pretty omnidirectional, so facing the woofer cone towards the listener doesn't matter nearly as much as with a tweeter, for example.
