Speaker question (buying new set)

Looking for some new home speakers for my PC.

here is what I prefer:

-3 speaker set, including a subwoofer. I thought about a 5 speaker setup, but the room I am going in, just don't think I have the space/capability to stick in 5 speakers.

I am a gamer, but I also listen to a lot of music (iTunes, .ogg file), with a mix of music, but listen to a lot of ambient music (http://www.kahvi.org, is one of my favorite sites).

What should I look for? I am looking at Klipsch speakers. here are two I am looking at:

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1

Klipsch GMX A-2.1

I like the Klipsch brand (home theater system is klipsch and it rocks!).

I guess one of my main question is:

What is the difference between 2.1, and 5.1?

Anyone have recommendations?

I appreciate it.

If you're willing to spend $200, I'd get Klipsch Ifis from costo. Otherwise you can refurb ifis for about that much on ebay.

5.1 means 5 satelites and 1 subwoofer, 2.1 means two satelites and a subwoofer.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

I like the Klipsch and will probably get the promedia 2.1 set. Everything i've read is great.

One other thing:

What would be a good soundcard to go with a set like this? What should I look for?

thanks

This is good if you're going to stick with 2 channel music.

Otherwise M-Audio makes good stuff if you need more channels. Creative is good if gaming is a concern.

One last question:

Anyone know much about Harmon Kardon speakers?

I've narrowed it down to the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 and these:

http://www.harmankardon.com/product_det...ENG&cat=MME&prod=SOUNDSTICKSII&sType=C

Any input?

just from the pictures, it looks more aesthetically built, rather than sound quality built.

for a 2 speaker setup, i would go with the swans like y0y0 mentioned. many people seem to love those speakers.

THanks inlinefour.

On the swans, I've been reading about them. Sound like the quality is exceptional.

For anyone who has purchased them, do they come with a subwoofer?

Definitely getting interesting.

I appreciate the feedback.

You also might want to check out Logitech's THX offerings. I got the Z-2300's and a friend of mine has the ProMedia 2.1's and I can't tell the difference between the two. Phenomenal speakers.

Klipsch i think nice.

Harmanandkardon- For me Sony better
Swen- garbage, but if you have few $, maybe its good choise but i dont think so.

So if i will take acustic i will take Sony.

So Harmanandkardon, jbl and and so on its good marketing but not so good sound for that money.
From the hifi i prefare more Sony then Klipsch, Harmanandkardon, Swen and so on.
For Klipsch i dont know for 100% becouse were i live they dont sale their product.
Just my opinion.

Don't buy those hk speakers...

Seriously if you have the money, the Ifis are probably a lot nicer than the promedias. I replaced my Promedia Ultra speakers with RSX-4s (The ifi has RSX-3s) and they are so much nicer. The Ifis also have a better subwoofer than the 2.1 promedias.

Swans are nice if you don't need a subwoofer. Logitech also makes some decent speakers.

Swan m200s are more like bookshelf speakers than your average set of computer speakers.
Check the dimensions on them just to see if you think that's something that would work for you.
Placing them to sound best can be a bit trickier than other sets, but once they're set up right I've read some very good things.
They are a 2.0 set, not 2.1 so they don't come with a subwoofer. They have pretty good bass response on their own though.
http://www.swanspeaker.com/product/htm/view.asp?id=3
The size of their 5" drivers are what a lot of computer speaker sets would use as a "subwoofer"

If you want more bass though, you can add a sub to the set later. Something like this dayton when it goes on sale again could be used with those.

Where are you from?

You say Klipsch is nice but they don't have it where you are?

And Sony beats HK and JBL?

You say Swen (Swan?) is garbage - do you have Swan where you are?
