Speaker cloth as fan filter?

I put a 12" subwoofer grill on the side of my Rocketfish:

side panel

I am going to connect a 250mm fan to it. But I am super worried about dust. Just want to know if anyone has tried using speaker cloth as fan filters? I'm sure it'll definitely help keep the dust out, but how will that affect the airflow?

I've used it before. Didn't work great but it did keep a majority of the junk out of the case.

How are you going to seal off you fan with that large of an opening? Foam?

open-cell foam would be best for this. go to a home improvement superstore and say you need to get a replacement filter for a window air conditioner made of open-cell foam, they will show you the stuff. That stuff is perfect for case filter material.

It's not going to be a filter, it just will cover up the appearance of a fan or keep your fingers out.

Think about it, particulate like dust, is pretty fine. So you need a pretty fine filter to keep it out. Sonically conducive speaker grills will not keep dust out.

...which is exactly why I use open-cell foam made for A/C units. It catches a large portion of the dust while being very low flow resistance.
