Speaker cable question

what would happen if i temporarily, used a much thinner cable than regular speaker wire for my sound system? I have some copper around and just thinkin about hookin it up before i get speaker cable.... can i do any harm to the speakers or receiver?

I use CAT-5 for speaker wire. My ears can't tell the difference.
