That is correct, to a limited extent. The Monster cables you see a lot, will give you a 0-1% improvement in sound quality, for at least a triple increase in price. I would not recommend buying any Monster type cables unless you have a particular shielding problem that you think it may solve. Otherwise you will likely be severely let down, as well as wasting your money.

My cousin works at BB, and he says the audio guys sell the crap out of that stuff because of the huge profit BB makes off it. But, they don't buy it for themselves.

A note about Monster type cables:

They are made with much smaller strands of copper wire. Electricity travels on the outside of the copper wire, not through it. Anyway, this has the effect of reducing electrical resistance (Ohms).

They are also usually shielded much better. But unless you are getting EMI, or RF interference, this will do you absolutely no good.

Also, the "gold" connectors are mostly good only for preventing corrosion. Similar to when you connected EDO, or FP RAM with gold connectors to a MB with aluminum wired slot connectors, or vice versa (you eventually got corrosion). It also reduces your Ohms by a very small amount.

IMO I wouldn't buy that stuff unless I had money burning a hole in my pocket.

Sounds like your speakers to me, that they do it with the PC powered off is a dead giveaway. I get no audible hiss, even with all volumes on max, from either my Audigy 2 ZS or my Chaintech av710 hooked up to either my Gigaworks system or my Senny hd280s 🙂

ive heard some good speakers on comps and i couldnt hear any hiss and with my cheapo speaks they hiss like a saigon whore on new years

That's the point I was trying to make yesterday. If there is no input and they still hiss, it's the amp (usually inside the subwoofer box).

There isn't really a good way to remedy this, except to replace the speaker system.

I did some tests on various systems in my house and the only amp not hissing is my NAD power amplifier.. Even a realativly high end onkyo I have hiss.🙁

Nice little red herring argument you have there. I am saying how crappy radioshack cables are made, and you went on and bash Monster Cables.

I have three standard Radioshack Mini to mini failed on me and gave me a lot of hiss because the ground is screwed up. I used them to connect my ipod to the "aux in" in my car.

I DIY all my cables with Canare Starquad and Canare plugs. I don't need to spend much on them and have no problem what so ever with them.

He didn't list what kind of cables he is using, so that can still be part of the problem.
I am not saying the OP to go splooge $500 on cables, I am saying he should try some well constructed cables.

That wasn't meant as an attack on your post...

I just see people drop a small fortune on cables when they don't need to. It gets me upset when I see people wasting money for no good reason, that's all.

The cables are most likely not part of the problem. He still gets the hiss with no input. The only cables that are left in the equation are the wires going from the amp, to the speakers.

I've got an Onkyo micro-system MC35Tech hooked up to the audigy 2 zs (2 channel analog) and I have no hiss even at full volume with the PC on or off. Before getting the Onkyo I used el cheapo speakers which hissed all the time, and I hated it because I was forced to turn them off every night (in the bedroom), after turning the PC off. Now I just leave the Onkyo on all the time, and cann't hear any noise - mind you the sound quality is great and it's plenty loud - it's usually only on quarter of the max volume.

this might sound stupid, considering your post number and obvious computer knowledge (i.e. RAM thread)...but did you check the connections? A loose wire connection to your pc or to the speaker control box thingy coul cause this problem.

edit: d'oh, didn't realize this was so old

Nothing quite like plain 16ga zip cord for that now is there?

Well they even hiss when comp is off.

I had exactly this, and humming from bass, even with volume off, and sometimes with computer power completely off. I finally discovered the surprise reason by accident.

The telephone line into my box was too close to a little power transformer for the speakers sitting on the desk. I could hold the phone line & move it back & forth near the little transformer and produce instant hissing.

By simply moving the telephone line away from there, the whole problem went away.

So you might try that. Hope it helps.
