SPDIF problems

I have the Logitech Z-680 and the SB 2ZS.
Till yesterday the decoder of my speakers was playing fine. Now for some reason I can't seem to use it. (SPDIF option and use of external decoder, internal through soundcard works fine)
I can do the decoding through my soundcard (CP->Audio HQ->Device controls->Installed decoder)just fine and the speakers will produce the output but when I try to do the decoding from my speakers I have no sound! (same route but use the option external decoder SPDIF which uses the decoder of my speakers)
What has happened?
Possible conflict somewhere or damage in my decoder of the speakers?
How can I check if the decoder of my speakers is damaged?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
