At the moment I have my comp hooked to surround reciever via coaxial SPDIF. Problem is i cant seem to get 5.1 sound out of it. I only get sound out of my front left and right speakers. I have installed latest drivers and have my speaker settings at 5.1. Im all out of ideas so any help would be most usefull. I want to play doom in 5.1 . :(

Does Doom do dolby digital encoding in realtime?

Your soundcard does not, unless it's an nvidia motherboard's onboard sound. Everything else just sends 2-channel stereo through the digital out for game audio. For movies, the soundcards just pass through the pre-encoded 5.1 audio as-is.

I am using nvidia onboard sound. Im not sure if doom 3 does dolby digital or not but the problem is the same when watching a dvd that is in 5.1 oor using the speaker utility that sends a tone to each channel.

I just checked your rig, I don't think nforce3 motherboards have soundstorm encoding, just some nforce2.

For DVDs you might need to tell the onboard audio driver and/or the DVD player software to pass through the digital as-is instead of converting it to analog.

For Doom and other games you'll need to use 6 analog channels.

Ah poop, to much work to go buy cables with 3.5 mm jacks and splice them to go into the seperate channel inputs on my reciever. I ll just have to live with 2 channel. Thx for the help
