ok so my mb has the internal connector for spdif, but the case i bought has only 2 conductors for spdif connector. is there a "card" that I can buy that just has the external connection so that i can plug it into the MB?

Not a sound card per se, but basically a spdif connector with a case bracket on one end and the 3 pin connector on the other.

hope that makes sense.

The link posted by yh125d for me confirmed my experiment. It does not help with the solution however.
I split from the mobo SPDIF & GND (not 5V) to pass to both backplate (w/ Toslink & SPDIF ) & my graphics card. The audio passing OK to backplate after split but still no audio via HDMI. The only thing left for me to try is not to use the Toslink signal (shouldn't matter).
I also do figure that whether the Toslink is connected or not the 'laser' light will still come on.

+4200 AMD Athlon 64X2
4Gb DDR2
ASUS M2N-VM DVI / DVI-D/VGA & HD audio (realtek)
+/- 2Tb HDDs
Point of view 9600GT 1Gb DVI-I & HDMI (w/ audio passthrough)

Any ideas anyone? :frown:

When I did this for the office display system (basically 50 inch plasma running a "about the company" type movie over and over, I had to flip the digital outputs on in the sound control panel. My sound card didn't have the internal connector on it so I plugged in to the rear and then fished the cable inside to the video card. Since this PC's life is delgated to a little vented closet that no one sees, I didn't worry about the looks. I used a Dell percision 390, and a cheap ATI HDMI card.

got it wired up, and windows showed the "vu meter" moving, but no audio. Can i hook up a voltmeter to check the output of the cable?

Well let me state it as follows: Is the signal coming from GND/SPDIF on the M2N-VM DVI mobo the same as normal SPDIF ? (ie the connection on the back of the PC IS SPDIF & Optical). Not sure whether the back-plate changes the signal in any way.

& yes the last drivers are loaded & checked for the files containing the letters HDMI, they were included (WDM190 from Realtek site).

The back plate issue is what I'm wondering, the MB i have has an add on module for the spdif and it looks like there's some circuity to it, so I may be screwed.

Same here, (I do own the module) but we'll find a solution, (I do have a feeling the circuitry is only for the Optical output) if all else fails even running 2 wires from the module's S/PDIF RCA to the HDMI input could be an option. (thx imagoon)

Changed Toslink (optical) cable to S/PDIF (coax) & sound is the same as it was with toslink (just a longer cable now - almost twice the length) Still no audio insertion on the 9600GTs HDMI.
Nxt raiding an RCA connection for 1 jack w/ 2 wires & introducing this to the 9600GTs S/PDIF input.

Gave my problem a runby @ Point of View (manufacturer) & they gave the standard answer. People not carefully reading everything gets you those answers. Kinda starting (understatement of the year 4 me) to get frustrated. In any case they also mentioned that the physical card might be broken & warned against flashing as it would void the warranty. So until further notice from Point of view I'll leave things as is.

SPDIF only needs 2 connectors, 3rd is a ground. When I connected an HDMI video card recently, it only had 2 connectors and the mobo had 3, so I just looked in the book to see which terminals were the positive and negative, and ignored the ground.

I showed point of view the picture I made of the split & they said nothing. I was only told to bring the 9600GT back to the store as faulty!

I'm not about to shove +5v on S/PDIF (good I didn't) - Check this:

"S/PDIF uses 75 ohm coax cable with BNC Connectors. However RCA jacks are common on computer equipment. The maximum cable length is 10 meters. The output voltage level for SPDIF is 0.6 volts maximum, with input voltage levels of 0.2 volts. SPDIF signals may also be provided as TTL voltage levels. Fiber connectors are also common using TOSLINK fiber connectors. Because the IEC standard defines the characteristics of S/PDIF, the IEC specifications should be used instead of the SPDIF standard."

YOUR +5v CONNECTION WILL KILL ANY EQUIPMENT ON THE FAR END.
I HAD ALREADY MENTIONED THAT THE +5v IS USED TO POWER THE TOSLINK LIGHT

sswingle: either you wrongly connected the wires or you might have to check the S/PDIF port you sent this signal to.
You may be in trouble. The little extra folder that was added with the card stated clearly (in chinese - w/ pictures) to ONLY connect S/PDIF & GND to the card aswel as the mobo. +5v wasn't even mentioned.

It will take until tomorrow to bring back the card to the store/hopefully they will replace it immediately (I'll tell 'em that that is the only way to operate my PC - [besides another DVI-D & VGA - but that's for me to know & them not to])

ADDITION:
I did have to relax a setting (threshhold) in the Samsung service menu, make a monitor specific INF (& replace PNP inf) & finally went from 60Hz to 50Hz in frequency.

ripped a RCA cable apart. cabled from rear of ASUS module to (after split) to internal spdif on graphics card & amplifier.

LPCM (spdif) sent via EN9600GT HTDI 1G DVI>HDMI to LE23R81B (HDMI) faultless.
AC3 & DTS are not decoded by the LCD TV so they have to be sent on the HDMI cable as LPCM 6 or 8 channels.
