spdif audio not working! gigabyte GA-8IHXP r3.0

I am working with my friend's new rig here. This is the newer version of the board, with the Realtek chipset. No sound will come out of the SPDIF output plug. We have updated the driver (Using Gigabyte's driver and the newest realtek driver from dec 2002)

Has anybody else delt with this?

Did we miss an option? We could be complete fools. Please tell us so.

2 days later... it's fixed. for all you who are wondering, or would like help me try to explain it, here is how it is now working.

Downloading new software & driver packages from both realtek and gigabyte did nothing.

On a "ready to give-up" whim, I installed Power DVD (6.1 channel version). Going to the options, I told it to "use SPDIF". Sure enough, I could hear sounds in the DVD movie.

Not only could I hear the movies, now windows media player also worked, and the wonderful IE clicking.

Any ideas on why this is?
