The clip on my 2003' car key just broke, guess its time to start using the 2nd one.

How may people here kept the second key safely stored away??
and how long after you bought it did you start using it?

I'm still using my first key, but the battery cover fell off the remote. I need to find my second remote.

Still using 1st key on 99 GMC, spare key is the wallet in case I lock myself out. Which happened once in while when I played paintball.

You only get two these days?

I've lost a spare but never my original.

If I ever buy a car with one of those chip-embedded $130 keys, I'll insist the dealer throw in a 3rd key as part of the deal.

I never use the 2nd. I keep that one safe and if I lose #1 I make a new copy, use that and the original gets put back away.

My mini cooper came with two of those 250$ electronic keys and 1 plastic spare. I gave the other key to my mom for safe keeping and I keep the plastic spare in my wallet. I figure if I ever lose both my car key AND my wallet, I'm going to need someone to bring me the key anyway, so it might as well be with the 1 person I can trust/rely upon.

edit: fucked up thing is the battery in the electronic key gets recharged by being in the ignition, so if she goes an extended period of time without using the key, the remote functions don't work properly :p

Got lots of spares including a spare remote. I've got that problem covered.

I like the cars that come with the 'thin' spare key (3rd key) that way you can place it in your wallet and open the door if you ever lock yourself out.

I haven't touched my second key. First one's going strong.

I'll probably use it until the battery in the fob dies, then switch to the second one until its battery dies, then spend a week manually locking and unlocking my doors until I either lock my keys in the car by accident or get fed up and finally buy a new battery.

My spouse and I both carry keys for our three vehicles, so there aren't any spares to put away.

I have backup keys/fobs for all my vehicles.

All my vehicles have a keypad so I don't need the keys to get in.

:|I have lost one of my electronic car keys and now need a replacememt. the dealer says $500. Surely there must be a cheaper way?
