Hey Everyone,

Here's the deal. I was running RH 7.2 on my desktop, and decided to go back to a dual boot because I needed decent CD burning software. I did a low level format of the master HDD to wipe out the GRUB boot loader, and then installed WinXP. Once the install was done, I started having wierd problems when the system would start or restart. Here's my hardware setup:

Duron 900 at 1GHz (It's been running at 1067, but I clocked it down cuz of all this)
MSI K7T266 Pro2
Alpha 8045
Maxtor 6GB (master)
IBM 40GB 60GXP (slave)
Plextor 24x10x40 CD-RW (master)
Sony 52x CD (slave)
Gainward GF2 MX400
Linksys 10/100 network
USR Modem
Enhance 350W PSU (with a panaflo fan)

I'd probably be really confused and even more agravated if it wasn't for the D-LED feature of this mobo. It hangs when restarting or from a full powerdown. The most common error reported by the DLED is: "Testing Real Time Clock". THe solution I've found is to turn off the PSU, and drain the power, and turn it back on. The other, more distubing, error reported is : "System on (The D-LED will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly)". Ouch!!! There hasn't been any problems before. Only thing I could think of if that before this reinstall is that Linux had been running onthe system for about 2 weeks steady. I've also tried making sure all the cards and memory are plugged in tight. THe only thing I haven't tried is reseating the CPU. I figured I'd see what y'all had to say here before I unmounted everything just to unscrew the Alpha.

Thanx in advance!

Oh yeah. One other thing is that when I started all this, I had the 3.3 bios. Once I got XP running I used the Livebios to get up to the 3.5 bios.

I'd suspect the PSU first.
What kind of voltages are being reported in the BIOS?
It would have been better from a trouble shooting point of view if you hadn't done the BIOS flash.

Second, pull all of the stuff out of the case exept for processor, video card, ram, and boot HD. Fire it up and see if the symptoms return. If not start adding stuff one at a time till you either get them all installed with no problem or the symptoms return. The last change is the culprit.

Good luck.

If Tigers solution doesn't work, then revert back to the old bios and see if it still has the problem.

Run it for a while and see what happens.
The PSU you've got should be plenty big enough to handle the system.

Here's another thought....I unlocked this processor by way of a plain old #2 mechanical pencil. If those contacts were to degrade somehow, would the results be something similar to this?

I'm going to take it all apart tonight in hope to resolve this.

Well, that didn't work. :( I took everything apart, redid the pencil markings, reseated the CPU and fan, and put everything back together. It worked fine for a enough reboots to get the HDD partitioned and formatted, and then nothing! It seems that this PS would be plenty for just a Duron....I'm afraid my CPU may be hosed....when I took everything apart, the mounts for the Alpha were a little loose. Not sure if they loosed inside the case sometime, or if it happened when I undid the screws to remove the fan. However, this still would not explain why it runs fine once it boots, but not when it starts....

ANy new ideas?
