Spanish-speaking ATOTers, I need really simple help

Let me preface this by saying we had to learn Spanish in school, but that was years ago. Not only was my understanding of the language spotty to begin with, it's deteriorated over time. I can understand enough to have a vague idea of what someone is talking about, but beyond that I'm lost, and I can't say much of anything worthwhile.

Now, my girlfriend is from Mexico City, and while she and her sister speak English, her father only speaks a little, and her mother none at all. Obviously, there's a problem with communication. Her mother and I only understand each other enough to communicate really simple things ("This is Maria at 15", "She isn't here", "Do you want some water?").

So, despite the overly long introduction, I basically just need to know the best way to ask to speak to Maria on the phone. 😛 Is it better to ask "Is Maria there?" or "May I speak to Maria?" And I know you answer the phone with "bueno", but what do I say to that? Hola? Buenos dias? Como esta? Man, I don't know.

Thanks to being around my girlfriend and her sister all the time, I am slowly developing an understanding of Spanish, but I don't pick up enough. I'm teaching her more English than she's teaching me Spanish.

Anyway, thanks for reading. Help me out.

Buenos dias, me permite que hable con Maria? or Buenos dias, me permite hablar con Maria?

I would assume that either one will be good enough for her parents - don't think they'll expect you to grasp spanish that quickly.

Thanks a bunch! It was one of those situations where like... I knew how it could be said, but I didn't know if that's how it's actually said. And talking to The Parents isn't something you want to leave up to Babelfish. 😛

Me permite que hable con Maria... Cool, thanks a lot.:beer:

Babelfish translation:

"Good day cabrones, I am the fiancè with the giant whistle....puedo to speak with my puta with great teats"

😀

lol...."puta" means "whore", just FYI. 😛

Depends on the exact region, but sometimes the "proper" way is something like. Buenas tardes Senora como handa usted? (chit chat) Es tan bueno oir, podria hablar con Maria?

but usually

Buenas, se encuentra Maria?

works, it just depends on the family, my last GF's family was like like the first part. Had to pretend so much.

Haha, I don't need a translator to understand that one. 😛

How do you say "eat sh!t and die" to your boss? In spanish of course

Que coma mierda and se muera.

"and"? 😛

LOL. My Spanish prof in college would bitch slap me. 😉

Don't worry, I do the same thing too (mixing English and Spanish words, that is). 🙂

It doesn't help that it's been a year and a half since I last took a Spanish class or actually spoke much....lol

Well, she told me earlier that I can say "Podria hablar con Maria?" She says that's how it's usually said... Does that sound right to you guys?
