Spam e-mails sent from yahoo account

My sent list received a ton of spam e-mails from my yahoo account (under my name) - that I did not send.

How is this done? And, what is the solution?

Your sent list received spam? Not sure what that means...does that mean you have spam coming from you in your Sent folder?

A couple of things could be happening -
1 - Your account credentials have been compromised and spammers can log in to your email account. You need to change your password and security questions immediately to regain control of your account.

2 - Your account credentials have not been compromised, and spammers are just spoofing emails to look like they're coming from you. There's really nothing you can do to prevent a spammer from spoofing an email so that it looks like it's coming from you. You might want to consider changing your email address if this is the situation that you're in and there is a large amount of spam being sent "from you".

Agree with seepy83 on that, it appears your account has been accessed. This is most common if you are using the computer is a public place; work, library, etc especially if you are not logging out. Have you used a public computer recently?

Change your yahoo password immediately. Do a heavy virus/malware scan on any computer that you use. Until you know otherwise, you might want to assume that other passwords may be compromised.

I did not properly explain the situation - sorry.

Yes, an e-mail was sent from my yahoo account. It was not spoofed. I was prompted by yahoo to change the password a few days ago. It was not an e-mail, it was me logging into yahoo and being asked to change my password.

No virus/malware detected.

Why would Yahoo ask you to change your password?

A couple of coworkers asked me about that recently (regarding their personal email accounts). Yahoo might be monitoring for accounts being accessed from unusual locations (like umm...chinese IPs when they've only been accessed from the US before?), and then blocking access from foreign IPs and forcing a reset the next time there is a legitimate log in. I don't know if that's what they're doing. I'm only speculating...but it's perfectly reasonable.

Over 1.3m email adresses with usernames and passwords have been leaked the last couple of months. Most of them where made visible to the public. If you want to see if you mail was part of it and if you should change your password go here
https://shouldichangemypassword.com/
Just enter your email adress and it will tell you if its compromised

If you need to change your password here's a good password generator. You can use the online one or download the Tool from PcTools.

If your looking for some background info on the first site mentioned go here
