1-9-2004 Space Station Still Losing Air Pressure -NASA

The Russians used the same hardware aboard the Mir space station and learned that it tends to develop leaks as it ages, NASA said.

NASA said the station's air pressure had fallen to 14.03 pounds per square inch and is approaching the level of 13.9 pounds per square inch at which pressure is too low for the optimal operation of some equipment on the orbiting lab.

Although the pressure loss is not dramatic, it is more than the five-year-old station has experienced before, and adds to a mounting list of problems that include faulty monitors for air and water quality and a broken gyroscope used to orient the spacecraft.

Kaleri spent much of Thursday dealing with another atmosphere issue. A Russian system for generating oxygen, once a suspect in the pressure leaks, failed completely after working intermittently for weeks.

Sounds like it's time to splash this puppy too...and we want to compete with China to build a Moonbase?

The ISS can hardly be compared to MIR.....It just amazes me when some ill-informed journalist writes an article about something they know zilch about and it gets published as gospel. This is typical of coverage of space activities in general...when things go bad, we have HEADLINES and all kinds of chicken little proclamations. When things go good or as expected we have ZERO coverage or back page coverage. Just watch how quickly the current Mars mission drops to the 'lifestyle' section of the news, that is until something goes WRONG. Then the cost of the mission (comparatively modest) will be plastered all over, why are we spending this on space, etc...

Sorry, but this has bugged me since the days of "they can send a man to the moon, why can' they.......

MIR was a good station that long outlived it's projected lifespan. As with all complex custom built, leading edge things, you need to maintain it and repair it once in a while. Space station is a combination of hardware and men who maintain it. Which is why the Russians were able to keep MIR running for a long time. Maybe if they had internet access, they could have gone on ATOT and whined about it all day, but instead they fixed the problems and moved on.
