Why don't they just make a run to Fry's??? They have some cheap CPU/MOBO deals.

Don't these chips also have to be radiation/impact/shock/temp shielded? Think Panasonic toughbook x 1,000,000. The shuttle is subject to massive differentials in the environment. It would probably take a decent chunk of change in R&D to get any reasonably new technology in there. Same reason why modern jets don't have top of the line equipment either. And as SDIfox posted, if they can get the job done with 20 year old tech, why not stick with it?
