Space Heaters: What kind to get?

Ceramic
Convection
Parabolic Radiant
Oil Filled

So many options....how to choose?

We want one for our living room. It doesn't get the best airflow and stays cool in the evening.

Any suggestions?

Convection heaters will use more energy than radiant ones since they heat up the air, where radiant ones only heat objects.

i have a small ceramic which is just about useless in a fairly large room and an oil filled that puts out some good heat

Ceramic produces a channel of hot air. Technically a convection heater HOWEVER if you stand in the path of the air it will heat (and dry) you too! They require a fairly noisy fan on higher levels.

True convection units like the oil filled "radiator" will give the best even heat. If you want immediate heat to chase the chill a direct radiant heater with glowing elements or quartz encase wires is your best bet.

That would be the safest of the bunch. Even if a sire lifts his leg and pees on the heater it may smell funny but will still keep on kickin'. 😀

OTOH a quartz heater...SNAP!

I've found that heater fans work best at circulating warm air around the room, and they're cheap as well. Oil filled heaters kinda suck at circulating air, and only heat a small area about 4 feet around the heater.

If you want a small space heater that is portable (meaning you don't have to see it in the summer) I vote for the oil filled radiators. I paid $59+tax for a Kenwood brand from HomeDepot. There are cheaper ones, but this one has a digital thermostat and can be programmed for 24 hour efficiency. If you want to heat a room with one faster, get a small fan and you can really move the air around.... I was definitely surprised with the efficiency of these. My electric bill is pretty low.
