Governing by fear. More of the same old/same old.
Back in the early days of the "space race" (yea, I remember that) I though we signed agreements, or at least stated our intention, to not militarize space.

“The Outer Space Treaty represents the basic legal framework of international space law. Among its principles, it bars states party to the treaty from placing weapons of mass destruction in Earth orbit, installing them on the Moon or any other celestial body, or otherwise stationing them in outer space. It exclusively limits the use of the Moon and other celestial bodies to peaceful purposes and expressly prohibits their use for testing weapons of any kind, conducting military maneuvers, or establishing military bases, installations, and fortifications (Article IV). However, the Treaty does not prohibit the placement of conventional weapons in orbit and thus some highly destructive attack strategies such as kinetic bombardment are still potentially allowable. The treaty also states that the exploration of outer space shall be done to benefit all countries and that space shall be free for exploration and use by all the States.

The treaty explicitly forbids any government to claim a celestial resource such as the Moon or a planet. Article II of the Treaty states that "outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means". However, the State that launches a space object retains jurisdiction and control over that object. The State is also liable for damages caused by their space object.”

My opinion is that this is just a strategy to make Russia and China think the US has had some major technological breakthroughs, which will force China and Russia to spend shit loads of money trying to catch up. A similar strategy Reagan used with the “Star Wars missle defense system.” Even though that was touted in the 1980’s, we are only now seeing advancements in laser and railgun military weaponry.

Sure... but don't forget that the Army and Navy had their own separate Air Forces as well until World War II. Now it's a separate branch.... and the Army and Navy still have their own smaller aircraft divisions.

Yeah, it's confusing.

While we're adding new branches, maybe we should have our own "Cyberspace" division as well? "Cyber Force" has a nice ring to it! Their uniforms should have ScottEVests with VR Goggles and Powergloves :)

Can we all agree SPARMY is a better name?

Ummm... no. "Space Force" has much more SciFi merchandising potential. Space Force lunchboxes, Space Force hats, Space Force jackets... even a Space Force flamethrower! If there is one thing that our President knows, it's merchandising!

Tax Cuts for the Wealthy, leads to massive $trillionish Deficits, numerous Trade Wars that will cost $hundreds of billions, Funding Cuts for safety net programs, Healthcare repeals throwing millions off Insurance, and now an expensive Space Force program with no Enemy.

Winning = Bankruptcy

I don't think that Trump is that smart.

This is sooo funny

OMG, I died. One of my favorites

"Nasa is only going to tell us what they want us to know whereas Trump will send his own stuff and we will find out the truth."

The idiocy of thinking that the military will be taking over NASA or even just space exploration AND that NASA is holding back the "truth" but a new branch of the military would totally tell us the shit that NASA is keeping from us. Also the one about "I think the Space Force could prevent the next 9/11" was up there along with the "ISIS could get drones into space and threaten us all" :D:D:D

It wasn’t Reagan’s idea either. It was the brainchild of the defense industrial complex.
There is a lot more money pouring into the defense industry now, and they are hungrier for even more. If you don’t believe me, go look at their financial statements.
