There are simply no good space flight sims in recent years!

you could say that the incomparable Freespace 2 set the bar really high for everything that came after it, but even with todays complex 3D engines and tons of system performance there hasnt been a truly genuine attempt at making a grand scale mission based space flight sim. ( i call them "FPSs for Smart People" ;) )

it seems that the Trading genre has merged into the space flight sim genre with games like X series and Freelancer a few years ago (which was nice, but as a trading game kinda sucked).

Somebody needs to understand that Michael Vick may be sent to jail for Dogfighting, but in space sims, its essential!
also Aquanox 2, despite being underwater, was also cool but it was no Sub Culture

who's with me?? lets rally up and storm the gates! our voices shall be heard! we will not go quietly into the dark! (deep space that is)

I looked into this recently after getting tired of Freelancer... X3 was the only one to get a good mention... we really need something new.

Those aren't space flight sims. This is a space flight sim. :)

That said, FS2 is still an awesome game.

Well...as much as I want a decent space fighter game, after THQ bought Volition they pretty much turned it into a franchise factory cranking out Red Faction and Saints Row games; Larry Holland said he was done with StarWars for a while, many of his original team either retired or moved on to other things, plus LucasArts hasn't developed their own damn title since the last century and showed no real interest in the genre; while I'm not a big fan of the Wing Commander series, Chris Robert left his Microsoft and started doing movies...guess we won't see anything from him either. Now we can only pray that some European developers that is brave enough to revive the genre, even though there really isn't much market left....

I tried to get into the X3 and its prequels, I would install them, try to figure it out and end up playing something else in 10 minutes, Freelancer was the last good space sim I have played.

Id kiss Ross Perot french style if they remade x-wing........

Totally with you. I love the X series and Freelancer actually, but we need a linear space sim. Freespace 2 was like Call of Duty in space, and I liked that.

I miss the Xwing Vs TIE Fighter Series, and TIE Fighter, not sure what Lucasarts is waiting for, they need a sequel to one of these.

A decent BSG game would be awesome. Not that crap on XBL or that bin-ware PC game recently released.

Your best bet is the BTRL mod for Freespace 2. Only a playable demo is out now but it's highly polished and has a lot of content.

Space sims basically died out years ago. :( Freelancer was probably the last good one, and even that wasn't a traditional space game in many ways. The Freespace community is still going strong though, with a heavily updated engine and a number of excellent fanmade mission packs available. There is a large graphical overhaul currently in the works, which should be completed sometime in the next few months and bring the game up to speed with modern engines to a large extent.

If I ever come into possession of millions of dollars, I'll blow at least 1-2 million to fund a FS3 project. Hell, I'd buy the IP for FS universe myself and get a sequel out. So much can be done in FS2 universe.

I'm thinking 1-2 million dollars wouldnt get a person much. Making games is big multi million dollar projects nowadays. The little indies can do some things but its more time effort than dollar investment. Most people dont like working for cheap. At least not in North America.

It doesn't have to be big production. FS2 engine is open source (cuts down on scratch building one or licensing one), there's a huge community willing to put their time and effort into improving the engine, and there are plenty of fan fiction to utilize for story elements.

I still play Freespace 2, I downloaded alot of the free content and texture improvements and now it looks even better than before :)

Truly the last great space sim it was. And oh how I pine and hope for Freespace 3 or even Freespace with a new engine.

Yuo--agreed! It;s one of the reasons I enjoy Mass Effect, because it's the closest thing in ages to something like this.

Isn't this a pirating site? I was told that this site has illegal content.

A-Wing FTW!

It's an abandonware site. Technically it's illegal, but they take down stuff if the owner requests it. Most don't care as the game (generally) isn't selling.

I loved the x-wing series, even the odd but fun X-Wing Alliance. Freelancer was also a blast, I played that for many hours multi after I finished the single player. I would love a new Tie fighter or X-wing game. Heck, I would love it even if they did the EXACT same game but updated the graphics. I'd probably even pay $40 for that!
