I've got antivir and adaware running. havent had any slowdowns or viruses yet. but yea, I'd feel more secure with corking this swiss-cheese of a stock OS

This was a decent question... over a year ago.

Service packs are NOT optional with regards to security.

That isn't true at all. All of the security patches are still released for SP1 and SP2. Sooner or later, SP2 will be your only option for security patches. But not right now.

Actually it is true. The only caveat is SP1 is still a valid SP from MS. This isn't normal. However, SP2 still provides more security fixes, so with regard to security it isn't optional. There are many exploits that affect SP1 with current patches that don't affect SP2. Also new exploits aren't as likely to affect SP2, where SP1 may need further patching (IE, after the exploit is know).

It's still really not a good way to think about SPs (as optional). I mean sure, wait a week/month to make sure it's not going to caues major issues.

The only reason MS hasn't closed the door on SP1 is because there a still a bunch of idiot companies that don't have SP2 compatible products. I know, we have two fairly critical programs in our IT department that don't work/aren't supported on SP2.

I wouldn't use that crutch to avoid SP2 in a general stance. n

Microsoft always supports the previous Service Pack. This was/is true with NT4 and 2000.

But SP2 brings more to the table in terms of security than just hotfixes that are published for SP1/2 (DCOM, RPC, IE, NX bit, etc).

Yep. SP2 was not just hotfixes (as MS promised SPs would be from then on, like the last 4 times they promised the next one would be) but an upgrade.

Folks that complain it 'broke' stuff do not usually realize that A) they were already broken, but did not know it, or B) the firewall works and appears to have 'broken' things.

Time sure does fly. It has already been over a year since SP2 was released for Windows XP. These kind of questions were all over boards right when SP2 was first released and for many months to follow. It has now been over a year. I think the obvious answer is, yes, use SP2.

I am surprised Microsoft still supports XP SP1. I thought all service packs were supported for three years before upgrading was required except when the product entered the extended support phase after its last service pack. SP1 was released in Septemeber 2002. That was over three years ago. I guess Phoenix86 is right. It's only because some compnaies have software that is not compatible with SP2. How much longer do you think SP1 will be supported?

It's not normal for them to support previous SPs for this long. SP1/2 are different because of this.

SP2 won't likely be supported once SP3 (whenever it comes) is released like SP1 was. There will be a short trasnition window, not a year +.

I'd say good, but I couldn't say why. The one thing that stands out with SP2 is the firewall and the security center, but I have both of those disabled. I figure they must have fixed something though or they wouldn't have released it. My install runs well with SP2 and none of my many software programs have any issues with it.
