SP2 won't boot-up except in Safe Mode

I've been trying to install SP2 for over a year now. Every time the Winows boot screen starts with the blue loading line, my machine freezes and I have to do a System Restore. Microsoft tech support has not been able to help me. I'm using an ASUS PS800D-E with one Gig of matched RAM and a Pentium 2.8 processor. Any ideas to get this to install?
 
The main reasons I can think of are the following:
1 - spyware/trojans/adware/malware/viriiiiiiii
2 - incompatible hardware
3 - incompatible software (may need patches)
