Ok..the story begins about a year ago when SBC Yahoo DSL stated specifically that, ?many users will experience trouble installing SP2 onto machines running SBC Yahoo?. I called SBC and talked to a rep located in a remote area of Pakistan, and he said, "Do not install SP2 into your XP-OS, as there are many problems that we have not created a fix for yet.? I figured ok...give it a few weeks, a patch will be created, right? WRONG! Eight months later, SBC was still saying, do not install SP2.
So anyway, here?s where it starts to get weird. I have talked to a number of SBC users over the last few weeks and many of these people have successfully installed SP2 onto their rigs and had no problems doing so.
So, for the last few months, I have been running XP with no sp2 and have not had any security issues (that I know of?I mean come on, how safe are we out their in the Thunderdome know as Cyberland?).
After considering the purchase of the new X-fi sound card, I noticed that one of the ?basic requirements? of the card is to have SP2 installed in your OS. I really want this card so I called SBC again to inquire about their latest stance on installing SP2 with their internet software and they said, ?The previous issues that you mentioned have been resolved, you will have no problem installing SP2.? Riiiiight!
I went to download SP2 from Microsoft?s web site, started to install, and upon boot up (computer restart). My computer had to be placed into ?Safe Mode? and rolled back to a previous date in order to be operated normally. I have all of the new software from Yahoo, which has a bunch of new security packages too, much like SP2. However, most of the SBC stuff is turned off.
If anyone has any suggestions as to getting SP2 into my machine successfully please let me know. Are there any SBC users who have had a similar experiences? I really appreciate your help?thank you.
