Need some help. I installed SP2, or tried, installation froze and I had to cancel it. It rebooted then and now it blusescreens me saying that a certain file is missing and windows cannot continue. Has anyone else run into this problem, and can I fix this with a repair of windows? I have a lot of recent files I need for work that I cannot lose. Is there a solution?

The error message:

STOP: c0000135 {Unable to locate component}
This application has failed to start because winsrv
was not found. Re-installing the application may
fix the problem.

This is an alienware laptop, btw and I have my windows recovery CD. I'm just not sure what to do, don't want to mess anything up more than it is.

Thanks

Is it an A64 laptop by chance?

OK it's not the A64 problem plastered everywhere so try starting up in safemode or last known good config. If you get to desktop then try using the system restore feature or just uninstalling SP2. If none of that works then try to boot from the XP CD and hit R when prompted to reach the recovery console. Then use the chkdsk /r/f command then, fixboot then fixMBR if needed. Post back how you make out :)

I've never used the system restore feature, where would I find it if I made it to the desktop?

And for some reason my alienware recovery CD doesn't have the recovery option... press "R"... It gives me the option to install XP on a partition, delete xp from the partition or clear the partition. I am trying a normal windows XP CD right now to see if I get the same options.

You`ll find it in Control Panel then click on " Performance & Maintenance" icon while in category view,it`s at the top left.

Having some really bad trouble here! :( I'll try to cover it all in order that it occured, but before I say anything, will any of these steps mentioned above erase the contents of my HDD?

I did the /chkdsk /r/f and it said it fixed some errors. I rebooted to see if it worked, though it got to the point where the mouse pointer shows up, nothing more showed up. I had a moveable pointer and a black screen. I did a manual shutdown and turned it back on and went back into repair/recovery and typed "fixboot" and it cautioned me and I told it to proceed. It said it was complete, I restarted and got windows start-up screen saying windows was starting, even got to my desktop with the background. Then I went back to repair/recovery and typed "fixMBR" and it cautioned me again that this could cause serious harm to the master boot record, etc. I didn't follow through with that one, should I? I also tried to follow the instructions on this " http://www.anetforums.com/posts.aspx?ThreadIndex=29066 ", 5th post from the top, to no avail. In any case I cannot get my computer to start in Safe-Mode. When I press F8 while starting up it asks what media I want to use to boot. It lists my HDD, CDROM and Removeable Media (which I don't have). It gives no options about what type of start-up I want to use. I am trying to get to the system restore feature but nothing loads when I get to my desktop, all I get is a background image and nothing else. No icons, no taskbar, no start menu, nothing. I cant do anything at all except restart. All I can access is the ctrl+alt+delete menu which doesn't get me anywhere. There are processes running but they seem to be bare minumum. It also takes an unbelievable amount of time to startup and shut down unless I do it manually.

Forgot to add that there are also two options when selecting a drive when using the CD for recovery. c:\windows and c:\windows.0. I don't know what the c:\windows.0 is or if it is important at all.

Anyone, help? :(

Just an update, I booted into safe mode with the assistance of an Alienware tech. I am going to back up any files that I can before moving on to do anything else.

Thanks for the assistance, all.

Boot the PC in safe mode with command prompt.
Type in "regedit" and change
HKLM\System\Current Control Set\Services\RPCSS, "ObjectName" value to "LocalSystem".

Reboot and see if anything changes.

Or is that what AW had you do, and you're now completely OK?

Actually I read that somewhere but after 5 hours of struggling with it I am staring at my desktop like a deer in the headlights. :)

I will do that now.

Whoa! I'm not saying do anything - I'm asking what happened with AW. :)

That's one possibility - another is to uninstall SP2 from the recovery console.

There are lots of choices, and without knowing more information about the *current* status of yours and what they did it's tough for me to comment too much.

Start with this - what's the *current* problem? Where did they leave you, or what can or can't you do?

Oh, well really I just contacted them to find out how to get my machine into safe mode. It was a bit different than normal and I needed assistance for that. They really didn't tell me anything. I was going on what DAPUNISHER had said above and I also followed through with the post on another forum stating instructions from Microsoft's site on how to uninstall from the recovery console. I did that but I couldnt get to my registry to complete the final step, which is what you just mentioned. Should I then do that, or is there something else?

Right now my status is this:
-Boot-up in normal mode takes about 5 minutes (as does safe mode) and shows me my desktop background and nothing more except a mouse cursor.
-Safe mode does work, but I don't know what to do.

Objective:
Get my system back to the way it was before I tried to install SP2 and never attempt it again until I am sure it wont bring my computer to a crashing halt. :)

Just to clarify. What I can't do is boot windows normally and it doesn't run as it should. I can boot into safe mode, though, and do some things from there.
