SP2 basic firewall and Zone alarm

Ok, after installing SP2 I have noticed the XP firewall is a little more involved in protecting your computer. Ok I know that the firewall that was included before was better then nothing but didn't do all that much, I will assume that this one is worth about the same. My question(s) is, if I get Zone Alarm should I just turn off the XP firewall or should I leave it on? Will it cause problems if I leave it on? Would it provide any better protection if I leave it on?

Thanks!

I am asking myself the same thing.
My belief is if you have a hardware firewall and in addition the XP SP2 firewall enabled then anyone should be OK in terms of inbound traffic.
In the other hand, ZoneAlarm would monitor outbound traffic and let you decided what to do with it.

I dont think I will cause problems...I used ZoneAlarm for a few days with SP 2 and I did not see any issues.

I'd like to hear other opinions.

Hi,

IMHO if you're using zonealarm you don't need XP firewall. Configure zonealarm and then disable xp firewall.

zonealarm is definetly going to be a better software firewall than the XP SP2 one; the reason for this is that the SP2 firewall only does inbound filtering (it doesnt do any outbound whatsoever).

I agree that once zonealarm is configured there is no need to run the XP firewall.

Ok, thanks.

I figured that there was no point to use the XP firewall if I was going to use Zone Alarm.

There is at least one reason to continue to use the SP2 firewall. It loads before the TCP/IP stack and controls all inbound traffic. It is unlikely that you will be nailed between the TCP/IP load and the zone alarm load but it could happen.

WinXP security center is going to recommend to you that two firewalls is not the best plan.....

go with that..... geeeee which one to turn off.. LOL!

(I turned off the XP firewall and kept the zone alarm)
