SP1 with illegal ID

Hi, WinXP pro...
i have a XP pro with illegal ProductID(cdkey) when i install Service Pack 1 from windows...

do u know if i can search through my registry and look for the current cdkey that i have and then change it to something that works?

all i can find are under these 2 directories: HKey_local_Machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion and windows nt/currentversion

just change it to something that works? do i have to do it under safe mode?
