I'm working on a computer for a friend. He has Windows XP Pro, and it was pretty out of date, so i installed SP2 only to find that every USB port(front and back) no longer function. If i plug my thumbdrive in, the little light on the drive turns on, but nothing is recognized. No printers, scanners, gamepads, nothin! So i restored, and everything worked ok. Then i tried SP1, and the SAME THING happened! This guy just got an iPod so he really wants USB2.0 capability, not to mention the various fixes and security updates that come with the SPs. Any suggestions?

ok i restored and installed every update except SP1/2 and the USB works...then as soon as i installed SP2 the ports stopped working again. so i restored again, and tried SP2 first, then all the updates, and the same thing happened. then i restored and tried both with SP1 and had the same results. I also tried uninstalling the USB devices and rebooting, but still no dice :(

You may want to check out the manual/website for the motherboard. Some motherboards have specific sequences in which you must install drivers and service packs in order for the USB ports to work.

This has been the case with two of my motherboards.
