SP1 Good Idea? Before or after activation?

I just bought XP Home and, I am about to install it on a machine. Is it a good idea to install SP1? Also, should I install it before or after I activate, or does it not make a difference when I install it?
 
Just to reiterate;

Yes, it is an extremely good idea to install SP1.

And no, it makes no difference.
